Sam loved his teddy bear, Teddy, more than anything in the whole wide world. Teddy was soft and cuddly, with warm brown fur, a stitched smile, and two button eyes that seemed to twinkle with kindness. Sam carried Teddy everywhere – to the park, to the shops, even to the dinner table sometimes (though his mum would gently remind him that Teddy preferred sitting on his bed during mealtimes). At night, Teddy had the most important job of all: snuggling right beside Sam as he drifted off to sleep.
As the last rays of sunlight faded from Sam’s room and the moon began to peek through the curtains, a little bit of magic would stir. When Sam’s breathing grew soft and even, and the house settled into its quiet nighttime hum, Teddy would slowly, ever so gently, come to life. His button eyes would truly sparkle, and his stitched smile would widen just a tiny bit. He wouldn’t move from his spot beside Sam, but he was now wide awake and ready for his night-time duty.
One night, a shadow danced on the wall, cast by the branches of the old oak tree outside Sam’s window. Sam stirred in his sleep, a little whimper escaping his lips. Teddy, now fully alert, puffed out his fluffy chest (just a tiny bit, so as not to wake Sam). He imagined the shadow was a friendly, fluttery butterfly who had lost its way and was simply saying hello to the window. Teddy sent a silent, warm thought towards the shadow, wishing it a safe journey back to its tree. Almost instantly, the shadow seemed to soften and sway gently, no longer looking scary at all. Sam sighed contentedly and snuggled deeper into his pillow.
Another night, a strange creaking sound echoed from downstairs. Sam’s brow furrowed in his sleep, and he mumbled something about a grumpy monster. Teddy listened carefully. It was just the old house settling, a familiar nighttime sound. To reassure Sam, Teddy imagined the creak was the sound of the house singing a gentle lullaby, a low and comforting tune just for Sam. He focused on this imaginary song, sending its peaceful vibrations towards Sam. Sam’s face relaxed, and a small smile touched his lips.
Sometimes, Sam would have a bad dream, his little body twitching and his breathing becoming fast. The moment Teddy sensed this, he would send waves of warm, fuzzy feelings towards Sam. He imagined he was wrapping Sam in the softest, most comforting blanket made of moonlight and dreams. He would whisper silent words of reassurance, telling Sam he was safe and loved. Slowly, the bad dream would fade, replaced by more peaceful slumber.
Night after night, Teddy kept watch, a silent and steadfast guardian. He wasn't fighting scary monsters or chasing away bad dreams with loud noises. Instead, he used gentle magic, warm thoughts, and comforting imaginings to ensure Sam felt safe and secure throughout the night.
As the first hint of dawn painted the sky with soft colours, Teddy’s magic would gently fade. He would become still and cuddly once more, just a beloved teddy bear waiting for Sam to wake up.
When Sam opened his eyes, he would often reach out and hug Teddy tight, a feeling of warmth and security filling his little heart. He didn't know about Teddy’s nighttime adventures, but he always felt safe and loved when Teddy was by his side. And as Sam drifted off to sleep each night, with Teddy nestled close, he knew, deep in his heart, that everything was alright. Sleep now, little one, sleep soundly. Teddy is here, and you are loved.
